| Standard Drawing & Painting class:
Students are taught the fundamentals of drawing by learning Old Master style lighting and shading. Beginning with pencil or charcoal, students learn how to see and think in terms of value, contrast and compositional balance. After a series of black and white exercises, students learn to work with color by using soft pastel- the primary learning medium. Typical first works include still life and landscape. Portrait and figure work is optional. Students who become proficient in the pastel medium may begin oil painting. The approach to oils is much the same as pastels. After completing a progression of oil exercises, students are encouraged to create original works.
Because instruction is individual within the class, each student works at his/her own pace and comfort level.
The curriculum can be specially tailored for students who need to complete portfolios for magnet schools and colleges.
Sculpture:
Students will learn the fundamentals of clay sculpture, either through the use of air dried clay, or clay/plasteline and will learn the age old technique of plaster casting. Students should expect to take 2-3 consecutive terms in order to complete the project.
Try-it class: Want to learn how to draw and paint, but hesitant to commit because you don't know if you'll be able to do it? Sign up for our try-it class. It's a one night 2 1/2 hour class where you'll receive basic instruction and supplies. If you decide to enroll in our full term you'll receive full credit against the regular tuition.
Advanced Teen Class Ages 14-18:
Permission needed for this class. Students will create original work only and will have an outside project to complete in addition to classwork. Students in oils may learn how to hand prepare linen canvases like the old masters and grind their own oils.
