| Standard Drawing & Painting class:
Students are taught the fundamentals of drawing by learning Old Master style lighting and shading. Beginning with pencil or charcoal, students learn how to see and think in terms of value, contrast and compositional balance. After a series of black and white exercises, students learn to work with color by using soft pastel- the primary learning medium. Typical first works include still life and landscape. Portrait and figure work is optional based on skill and desire. The next level in the process is oil painting. Students learn how to underpaint monochromatically and apply color in the overpainting. After completing a progression of oil exercises, students may work on paintings of their choice. Watercolor painting is available to those who have developed the speed and skill necessary to work successfully in that medium. The curriculum can be specially tailored for students who need to complete portfolios for magnet schools and colleges.
*Open Studio* Both students and non-students who need a place to work can spend up to 3 hours a week in the designated time slot. Each member is provided an easel, chair, drawing board and tray to use for their work. (No instruction/ time only).
Still Life (Pastel) Each week a new still life is drawn in charcoal and colored in pastel. Difficulty and complexity is based on student experience. One term of standard D&P is prerequisite.
